Big data is everywhere. It comes in different scales, speeds, and varieties. Big data has a profound impact on systems such as storage, communication, and computing architectures, as well as analytical fields like statistics, computing, optimization, and privacy. Data science has emerged in numerous applications, aiming to address the challenges of large-scale data analysis and transform big data into intelligent information for decision-making and knowledge discovery. Data science integrates theories and methods from statistics, optimization, mathematical sciences, computer science, and information science to extract knowledge from data, make decisions, discover new insights, and reveal new phenomena. The concept of data science has appeared in literature for decades, and different researchers have different understandings of it. Today, it has become a multidisciplinary field, combining knowledge from various disciplines to develop new methods, processes, algorithms, and systems for knowledge discovery. It now encompasses approaches for discovering knowledge from various types of data, which can be low-dimensional or high-dimensional, structured, unstructured, or semi-structured. Statistical modeling plays a crucial role in analyzing complex and heterogeneous data, quantifying uncertainties in scientific hypotheses and statistical results. This book introduces commonly used statistical models, contemporary statistical machine learning techniques and algorithms, as well as their mathematical foundations and statistical theories. It is intended as a foundational textbook in statistics for data science, providing the essential knowledge required for statisticians working in big data and artificial intelligence fields.

李元章，美国瓦利特里德国家研究院退休的研究院首席统计家及多所美国和中国著名大学的客座或外聘教授,现为东北师大外聘教授。拥有超过50年的研究生涯。他曾领导一个研究团队，开发统计/数学模型和方法，用于对流行病学、临床、社会科学以及工业研究的数据进行各统计分析。80多篇出版物，并在职业生涯中获得了众多各种奖项。
